The Fry-Petit lab is a solid state inorganic lab that focuses on rational material design. This is done by marrying computational and experimental tools. We use data mining, principle component analysis, and machine learning to better understand the structural driving forces of material properties and thus allows prediction of materials with certain structures or physical properties. This data driven process guides our synthesis and characterization of materials, both novel and known. This type of interdisciplinary approach to material science has been a great way to bring together math, chemistry, biochemistry, and physics student researchers.
