The key to understanding biodiversity lies in knowing how many different kinds of organisms exist. How many species of fish from this river? Do species X and species Y hybridize? Is this population in danger of extinction? Students in the Walter lab tackle questions such as these using molecular genetic and genomic tools coupled with rigorous field data. From oysters, to sleeper sharks, to freshwater fishes on oceanic islands, we characterize contemporary and historical genetic structure for the purposes of understanding population persistence, divergence, and diversification.
